Fourth & Fifth Grade Science Standards
(standards are taught in grade bands 4-5)
Earth and Space (ESS1)4th Grade
4-ESS1-1: Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time. For example, evidence from patterns could include rock layers with marine shell fossils above rock layers with plant fossils and no shells, indicating a change from land to water over time; and, a canyon with different rock layers in the walls and a river in the bottom, indicating that over time a river cut through the rock 5th Grade 5-ESS1-1: Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from the Earth. 5-ESS1-2: Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. For example, patterns could include the position and motion of Earth with respect to the sun and selected stars that are visible only in particular months. |
Physical Science (PS1)CURRENT LEARNING STANDARD!
5-PS1-1.Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
5-PS1-2.Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved. 5-PS1-3.Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. 5-PS1-4.Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances. |
Life Science (LS1)4-5 Plants and animals can be sorted according to their structures and behaviors.
4-5 Plants and animals have different structures and behaviors that serve different functions. 4-5 Certain structures and behaviors enable plants and animals to respond to changes in their environment. 4-5 Plants and animals have structures and behaviors that respond to internal needs. 4-5 Nutrition is essential to health. Various kids of foods are necessary to build and maintain body structures. Individuals have responsibility for their own health and food choices. |

Science Homework
February/March Homework: Practice for the upcoming Test4th & 5th graders have spend the last few months learning about landscapes, fossils, weathering, erosion, deposition, solar system, the Sun, and the Earth. Please take a half an hour a few times during the next week and help your child prepare for their upcoming test by playing Jeopardy with them!
January Homework: Constellation Creation Due Jan. 11-154th & 5th graders are learning about constellations. The purpose of this assignment is to assess how well they understand the effects of distance on a star's apparent brightness. The assignment has been attached as well as a presentation on how to complete the project. (5-ESS1-1)
October Homework: Landscape Layers4th & 5th graders are learning about the different types of rocks, the rock cycle, rock layers, landscapes, and landscape changes. Check out Mrs. Pifer & Ms. Troyer's completed landscape layers to see what the layers of their Saturday looked like! Please download the homework titled, "student_landscape_layers.pdf" if you need an additional copy of the assigned work.
